Bassferatu for Erika Lady Bass

BASSFERATU ! This instrument was born as an absolute challenge: to build a “hellish” skull and make it play!

The 3D design part was predominant in order to define all the individual parts, dimensions and solutions that would allow us to reach the goal.

Several issues had to be addressed and resolved: the modelling of the skull and the determination of the proportions based on the length of the strings, so that the skull would be free of accessories covering its face; the positioning of the bridge and pickup, the height of the strings and the relative position of the fretboard; the need for a particularly important neck heel, such that it would reach the support surface for the neck, so low as to give space for the model of the teeth and fangs; the total thickness of the oak block to be worked on; these were some of the essential points of the preliminary and definition project.

In the construction phase, it was necessary to raise the X-axis track of the CNC machine to allow for the correct movement of the Z-head, as well as to use special length drills to be able to mill the entire block of wood.

In the finishing phase, we opted for a “hell of a colour”: the live fire allowed us to achieve shades of black-brown, otherwise impossible with any artificial colouring.

As an extreme project, an equally special pickup was needed to achieve a rich band sound, even in a position so close to the bridge: a custom active pickup from Magnetics™ Pickups, humbucker stacked, made this possible!

The purple LEDs positioned in the skull’s eyes complete the whole, giving it that extra touch of extreme choice that characterised the whole project.

In order to be able to “harness” the instrument, it was necessary to invent a shoulder strap support which, attached to the back side of the instrument by means of three fastening points, would allow it to be played comfortably; an accessory made by 3D printing to a specific design.

The mother-of-pearl inlay on the 12th fret, with Erika’s Lady Bass logo, put the icing on this disturbing cake.

All in all, a relatively light, comfortable instrument with a monstrous appearance and granite sound.

Erika Lady Bass is a performer who likes extreme shapes and Bassferatu suits her perfectly!

We built it, write to us if you would like a copy or something equally extreme.

We believe it is very difficult to copy it….
